Beyonce and Jay Zoo have topped VFs "New Establishment" list or some such. You can read the story on SR. What really struck me is the fact that they were 8th last year. My question being, what have they done in the past year to make such a leap? Beyonce still hasn't recovered from a string of fails since 4flop and Jay Z has done nothing but jack Kanye's swag the past year. Beyonce has been plagued by bad press, ill-advised marketing gigs (pepsi) and lack lustre ticket slaes. Jayz's foray into the movie world (Gatsby) was panned across the board. What has put them on top this year? I haven't looked at the whole list but I'm sure a casual glance would be enough to spot more deserving individuals. Of course this list is just more PR noise. Barely concealed, even. I maintain that the big power players and money makers are the ones in the board rooms, the guys you wouldn't recognize if you ran into them. The execs and CEOs of this industry. VF is just another one of those tools used to sell the illusion to the gullible. Bey, Jay and all their friends make peanuts compared to what the suits make. I also find it ridiculously telling that they need to publicize every business venture they get into. And make it seem like they will make trillions from it. Many celebs have other ventures besides their day jobs. You don't hear them making a noise about it. If you ask me, it's more for show and the deals are not in fact as impressive as they claim. we also never hear the end result of the deals much. Did Samsung say how well their product sold with Jay's name attached to it? That was not a deal to benefit the phone company, but more to benefit Jay. If anything I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Jay paid Samsung for the chance to be associated with them. I think for these two, their time in the sun is drawing to a close and the name of the game now is "Creating the Illusion of Demand."

eljjai Everything you just said was so true, but what's crazy is the fact that Obamas are not on the list. See I don't trust VF when it comes to the list of powerful people or couple. As compared to some of the other magazines like Forbes or Times. And I wonder why is it that we always hear about the deals that were made but not about the final sales of the product? Everything about them is a lie or just for show. You never see other artist talking about the deals and money that they are making?

Because it was for an ulterior motive e.g. Samsung got access to users' data via the Jay-z deal. That's more valuable than the money he got.

Good post Eljjai! I don’t understand it either. The only thing I can think of is their connection to the Obama’s....but what happens after the Obama administration ends?
But, that is not even why Vanity Fair has put them at the top of their "New Establishment" list.
Btw, thanks for the Sandra Rose Link, which lead to the E link, which lead me to the VF article, where I found out why they topped the list. Here it is:
Reading from Vanity Fair
STAGE OF GLOBAL CONQUEST: The music business may be reeling from the digital revolution, but this power couple is only getting stronger. Jay Z managed to take his latest album, Magna Carta Holy Grail, platinum even before putting it on sale, thanks to a pre-order deal with Samsung. (For more on Jay Z, see our cover story, on page 156.) Meanwhile, Beyoncé delivered a scintillating Super Bowl halftime performance, released an HBO documentary, and then promptly sold out her world tour, the Mrs. Carter Show... Read the rest here.
I guess it is whatever VF wants! But if I was compiling the list.....before placing them at the top with the reasons outlined above, I’d have to ask...
1. Yes, Jay Z managed to take his latest album, Magna Carta Holy Grail, platinum even before putting it on sale....but did he do it fairly?
2. The Super Bowl performance....what about Kelly and Michelle... surely promising a DC reunion helped with ratings ?
3. And the HBO documentary that was written, produced, and directed by Beyonce, that revealed nothing and has disappeared without impact... Why even mention it?
4. Finally, The Mrs. Carter show.... Are we really going to disregard... Expectations of new music, reports of empty seats and tickets being bought by touts?

For vanity fair to toot that nonsense as fact makes them look like a joke. I bet Bey-zoo made some sort of deal to get on there. Because I know neither one of them are hot ont he streets. Jayz has been buying his own album since blueprint days. Bey's career is in the dumps and everyone and their blind grandma can see that. VF just looks a damn fool citing those reasons.

Nobody takes magazines or mass media seriously anyways, so this will have like, zero effect on people.
No one cares.
And its because of shit like this...the public caught on years ago that you cant trust the media, because they usually have some agenda being backed, whether by a public figure for their PR interest, or by cosmetics to sell their shit. We dont take the media seriously anymore. I know I sound like a square, but for some reason the only newsource I pay attention to is NPR....and they DAMN SURE dont give mention to Jay Z and Bey...thats also how you KNOW they aint shit...why do they only get mention from "poppy" or "trendy" type publications? Why not something serious like CNN, NPR, etc? And dont tell me Forbes, because Forbes isnt what it used to be either. Its just as gimmicky as the rest now.
No one cares.

"She was paying month to month the MINIMUM on all her o/s credits and loans. Then 5 mos after 2010 when she did the Sasha Fierce tour, all the creditors and mortgages were paid off in full. Just shows the music industry aint all that even when you get to superstar level either... you have to tour to keep that money and lifestyle flowin." ________________________________________________________________________
This quote above makes me think of this:
Not long ago I remember Kanye taking a jab by saying, in so many words, how these two practically beg to be spokesperson or representatives to several corporate businesses to so-called help push their product and to bring much needed attention, bragging rights and money to themselves. That it was not so much that corporate purposely sought after them to help to do so, but the total opposite. Maybe this is what is meant by the phrase, "New Slaves", that Kanye is referring to. I also remember an insider revealing that Beyonce's people would call certain magazines offering herself for photos if they would pay her a certain amount and that this too was a way she depended on to help pay some of her bills. Well, the incident revealed about their deceased Bodyguard gave way to this truth. The problem with this is that these two make it appear as though they are so in demand that people seek their assistance to bring in the big sales they otherwise wouldn't be able to do without them. We're talking about corporations that have been around and successful since forever. Granted, there may have been a few that did seek them out, but according to Kanye they beg to be put on and prostituted out by the big pimp(corporate). This is probably one of the main reasons they are able to pay their bills because we all know their extraordinary lifestyle couldn't be supported by albums sales, a few endorsements and touring alone. No, not the way they live. I'm sure there are only so many tax write offs one can get before they draw unwanted attention their way. It's becoming clear that these two would do almost anything to maintain this royalty image. Lie, cheat, beg, steal, etc... I feel for them when things really began to take a turn because they will indeed change. At some point they won't be able to do all they are doing now. They will no longer appeal to the public in the same way. In the same way they have down graded a lot of the music veterans in the biz, the same will happen to them because the younger generation won't find them fascinating, just old has-beens. Such as life! But if they aren't saving and are just waiting for the next big opportunity to happen so that the check can clear, then they will not be able to maintain the lifestyle they have at this moment. Will they one day have their very own episode of 'Unsung', telling us of what they used to have and who they used to be?
