Hello Rehabbers!
Taking a small break from my homework to share my thoughts. I've already talked a little about this topic on the DR website.
Not trying to call Beyonce untalented or anything like that, but there's too much hype and no substance about this girl and her career. She calls herself King B and has received during her career many accolades, awards and distinctions... Still I see nothing that live up to the "Female MJ" or "King B" hype that was created for her. Especially when it comes to the sales department. Many of her counterparts, who have less exposure, seem to be more successful than her, with less promo and effort.
Beyonce has sold around 30 million albums and 50 million singles worldwide. Not an official but more a realistic figure. Now that brings around 80-85 million records sold; maybe 100 million with extra releases (DVDs, remixes, etc...) This sale figure is, for ANY ARTIST, a very good figure. No doubt Beyonce is successful. However, with the "King B" title she gave herself, you would expect higher sales. Take a look at her album sales for example, which have been declining with each album. She doesn't have a single diamond album in the US, Dangerously in Love, her best selling record, did not even break the 5 million sales mark in the States and sold a little over 11 million worldwide. B'day and I am... Sasha Fierce sold around seven million each, and 4 flopped hard with about 2.5 million. Now don't me wrong, 2.5 million is good for a debuting artist, but not for an established star as Beyonce, and it sucks really hard when you're supposed to be a King!!!!! MJ's Invincible sold about 15 million copies worldwide with almost NO PROMO and even on his standards, he considered it as a flop at the time! So there's no way Bey is a King with two million copies!!!
As for her single sales, the younger generation is shitting on her, period. Rihanna has 12 number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and she started her career 8 YEARS AGO! Now we have to admit most of her hits are forgettable songs, besides "Umbrella", "We found love", "Rude Boy" and "Diamonds" most of them are far from being classics. But her global singles sales passed the 100 million mark.
Katy Perry also sold more singles than Beyonce. 8 of her singles got number one in the US... and Adele literally outshined her entire album sales with just one ballad, non commercial album. "21" sold nearly 30 million copies worlwide! In just 4 years, Lady Gaga as accomplished pretty much everything Beyonce has done in 15 years. Taylor Swift and Norah Jones also sold as much, or even more, albums than Beyonce.
And it's even clearer when you compare King B to the legends: MJ (nearly 1 billion records sold worldwide and counting, Thriller is the best selling album of all time with 100 million copies sold). Whitney Houston who has three diamonds albums under her belt (Whitney Houston, Whitney and The Bodyguard soundtrack which sold 45 million copies worldwide, the best selling release by a female artist). Janet Jackson (her album Janet sold 20+ million copies, Control and Rhythm Nation are certified R&B classics, 10 number one hits). Mariah Carey (18 number one hits on the Billboard hot 100, 2 diamond albums). Britney Spears (2 diamonds albums). Madonna (12 number one hits, nearly 300 million records sold worldwide). Prince (Purple Rain, 21 million copies sold, one of the best selling soundtracks of all time).
I could go on... but you catch the idea. Beyonce hasn't had a song or album that fits into this category. She is not even a best seller among the singers of her generation. Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys... They all OUTSOLD her! Yet Bey is a queen... Come on! Sales statistics are not in her favor, I think she struggles to find songs that will help her to get a hit on the charts. Her last number one was Single Ladies in 2008. And most of her recent songs are garbage. She is loosing her shine... Hence why there is no new album out.
