I stumbled across these Solange quotes years ago but we all may need to examine them again to understand what is going on with Beyonce. After I read these quotes, I think Beyonce may need to take a break and move in with her sister and get a reality check, but Beyonce and Solange need to have a sister-to-sister talk because I think they have hurt each other, Beyonce seems to have hurt Solange more.
Here is an old Essence 2009 article that discussed black hair and colorism. Solange was included in the discussion with other black celebrities like Ledisi. She made some startling revelations about her family. You can read the article at forum.blackhairmedia.com/solange-talks-about-tina-knowles-color-issues_topic368626.html
Here's a few revelations that stuck out and may explain Beyonce's behavior when it comes to her hair and colorism:
I appreciate Solange's honesty. One thing about her, she does sometimes tell it like it is which helps us gain insight into her very odd family. It took a lot to speak about this in 2009 when Beyonce was a big star. She sure did say a lot, it read like she had to say these things to heal herself.
She also stated in Essence 2006 that, “I've seen what my sister goes through for this business. I don't need it. I'll do what I want to do because I love it.” See this link for the article concreteloop.com/2006/09/solange-in-essence-magazine
Solange also walked away from House of Dereon. She stated, “I was involved as the spokesperson, but the clothes just didn't reflect my personal style and I decided to hand that over...I wrote a couple of songs on my sister's last album and if there's a line she doesn't like, she changes it and we keep on moving” See article at www.celebitchy.com/106705/did_solange_knowles_just_disrespect_her_sister_beyonce/
Beyonce stated this about Solange to Essence in August 2003 that is insightful about how Beyonce sees herself, “I admire her, and though she's five years younger than me, I strive to be like her. She's so smart and secure. She's sensitive to people's feelings, but not afraid of what they thin.” See this link for the article www.essence.com/2013/03/29/beyonc%C3%A9s-best-quotes-essence/
Ya'll may want to check out this long NPR article that Solange gave which discusses her Saint Heron record label. It has some revealing stuff like the fact that Solange wanted to be a ballerina, she studied ballet from ages 3 to 13 seriously and wanted to go to Julliard but we all know what happened....Beyonce's career took center stage and Solange had to give that up to be Beyonce's back up dancer. She even talks about how it's a financial struggle for her to be an independent artist (Beyonce must not share the wealth with her), she also only wants her label, “to be a home for artists who are already developed, who already have a great sense of their artistry or their imaging, who don't really feel or want that marketing push. Who really have it together and are the package already”-So why do they need to be on her label if they have it together already? Solange also is aware of this fact “There's just so so many overlooked R&B artists” However, she doesn't admit why, which we all know is because of her sister and father's scheming ways. Here's a few revelations that stuck out and may explain Beyonce's behavior when it comes to her hair and colorism:
- Solange stated she still has family that have an attitude of when they
see the light skinned girl with the long hair, flipping her hair, that
girl is automatically better than them/you. - Solange said she and her mother had to prove that they were down/black,
however, her mother would over compensate with her blackness by
wearing afros and doing stuff so people would not think that she was
bougie. - Solange stated: “We had so much resentment growing up. My mom, who is
Creole, was so protective against family influences. She was scared for
us, because many of my cousins still are doing brown paper bag tests,
maybe not literally”. - Solange stated after she had her son and was married, “I wanted to be
the typical pretty, long-haired trophy wife. That's when I started
wearing weaves-long and blond...after we broke up, I was like this is
gone..This doesn't even look right with my skin tone”.
