I'm not one for Stan culture for the most part but one of my guilty pleasures is a parody series called The Legends Panel (it's in the same vein as Got2BReal, which I think may have been posted here before). This is the latest episode (language NSFW)
I couldn't help but notice some Beyodel fans in the comments in their feelings about the new legends being upgraded while she still has only icon status. I wouldn't call Usher, Monica, Aaliyah, or Brandy legends either but I'm not tight about it because it's not real life. Why take it seriously? The show is literally a big joke - just get your ki-kis (as Prince would say) or watch something else. I couldn't imagine being so invested in a celebrity's accolades that I would get mad that some Internet comics didn't agree with me about their place in pop culture history.

Lol this is funny but gives food for thought. While I would take Aaliyah Brandy Monica and Usher all day any day over Beyonce and co. I don't think they deserve legend status. People like Whitney (rip) Michael, Janet, Mariah and Prince have longevity. They could still sell out stadiums today. They have survived changing times. Brandy and Aaliyah could barely sell out an ihop or subway train. Their staying pwoer is weak. I believe Whitney and Mariah's generation were the last to be able to survive what music is today. It's not as though Rihanna and Beyonce staying power will be any better though. If I were to make a criteria for legend status it would be as follows: 1. Originality - The ability to bring something new and never before seen in the world. 2. Influence- The ability to affect the behaviour/views of people across the world, and across various races. 3. Impression- The ability to remain in the publics collective consciousness without resorting to ridiculous PR stunts or over exposure of private lives. 4. Character/Charisma- A unique way of being and presenting oneself to the world that is unlikenable to anyone and hard/impossible to copy. 5. Quality of work- Work that speaks for itself and holds up over time. Work that is instantly recognisable or could define an era. 6. The hardest to attain and maintain- Longevity. Longevity in terms of the public still wanting to see you and your work be it new or old. To add I'd also say that one would have to have been in the industry more than 30 years instead of 20. Not all legends have every aspect of this, I suppose one could grade in percentages, for example, on a scale of 1 to 10 for each then a total. I think the Legend that most embodies all these qualities is Michael Jackson. Celine Dion lack the Influence & Impression but has everything else, she is very low profile but in steady demand and her voice is most distinctive. Whitney could have been up there with Michael but there came a point when her issues overshadowed her legend. Haven't really given much thought to who deserves legend status til now, but I've always known Beyonce was never and will neve be of the caliber.
